The Golden Cut of the Apple

Since Steve Jobs officially resigned from the top of apple (rumors of his death are still exaggerated) I’d like to make my tribute. Like him or not, he had an impact on the world of computers and beyound like few others: The story of the design and evolution of the apple logo is an interesting one – especially since most of the myths of hidden/deeper meanings are – you might have guessed – myths. Although they didn’t have Alan Turing in mind when they designed it, there is some mathematics behind it: recently I came across this outline giving an idea on how the proportions are related to the Golden Cut through the approximation of the Golden Spiral by the Fibonacci Sequence.

See this Interview with Rob Janoff, the designer of the Apple, NeXT and other logos for further info.

Finally, I’d like to share some related videos. First, Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address:
“Keep looking, don’t settle”. “There is no reason NOT to follow your heart and intuition”. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someones elses life”. “Stay hungry, stay foolish”.

Second, “Pirates of Silicon Valley” is something I can watch again and again. Here is the trailer:

“We are here to make a dent in the universe- why else would we be here ?!”.
Sometimes I think that the characters of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs formed the core of the “philosophy” of their respective companies which, in turn, can still be felt throughout their products.

And one more thing! After all, it was a NeXT machine that Tim “TimBL” Berners-Lee used at CERN which became the very first web-server. What would the world be like IF Apple had not fired Jobs, which made him start NeXT, which on his return formed the foundation for the development of OS/X and the ensuing Apple renaissance? Just a thought …
